RESUMO

The general objective of this study is to further understanding on the discourses that exist in the texts produced by authors in the area of religious travel and religious tourism, in the scientific production of Brazilian tourism and related areas, or carrying out research in this ambient. The object of this study consists of texts by Brazilian authors, on the ambient which they denominate religious tourism. The Methodology adopted for the collection, analysis and discussion of the data was the qualitative, exploratory approach of bibliographic and documentary review. The data collection procedures included the reading of texts and organization of data about the works and the authors, the context in which the texts were written, the nature of their construction, the framework used as anchorage, and the use of the work in tourism. The data were analyzed using the document analysis technique known as the Collective Subject Discourse Analysis CSD, through the following stages: selection of key expressions; central ideas; anchorage; and synthesis of the discourses. The results obtained relate to advances on tourism discussions and discourses associated with Catholic religiosity, since, based on their publications, they directly influence the practice and planning, as well as the interpretation of tourism in contexts of religious travel. This study also confirms that tourism still does not have any clearly-defined mechanisms for understanding the various cultural motivations in the religious environment, and in the popular religiosity of Catholicism, and that tourism lacks systematic and systemized studies on the different categories that interpret pilgrimage in what is defined as religious tourism. It also observes that there is a self-acceptance and self-citation among few of the authors, perhaps due to the small number of field studies found, which can shed more light on the discussion and understanding of the situation studied. This is because the works almost always focus on interpreting the activities only of visitors, forgetting religious followers and congregations. It demonstrates that the authors and researchers do not have a clear set of categories to explain and justify the use of the term religious tourism, therefore, it is assumed that they are unable to distinguish all the different elements which give support to the groups that coexist alongside the religious environment, far less the potential tourists to be found there, and on whom they intend to act.
