RESUMO

The objective of this work is to study the quality of video signals transmitted over wideband networks subject to packet losses. Increased transmission robustness is achieved by "scalability" or layered segmentation of the video signal. We consider spectral separation and requantization methods of scalability, as well as different levels of packet losses and bit rates. The study is based on software simulations of a coder-channel-decoder model. Numerical results are analyzed and typical rate-distortion curves are obtained for different sets of parameters. These results give guidelines in regard to the selection of robust methods of video transmission over lossy networks, and allow some comparisons between implemented schemes. The main contributions of this work consist of the model implementation and the analysis of simulation results
