RESUMO

This dissertation is an ethnography of the construction process of the Potiguara ethnicity way of the Serra das Matas, located in the districts of Monsenhor Tabosa and Tamboril, in the middle west of the state of CearÃ. It consists, therefore of a description of the day-by-day life and ways of the family group that compose this ethnic group. We tried to put in evidence in this essay the multiple contexts of the formation of Potiguara ethnic identity. It emphasizes the importance of the cooperation of the external agencies in the development of the Potiguara identity, revealing the relationships that are formed in the light of an affirmation of ethnicity and of access to indigenous rights assured in the Federal Constitution. Once verified the intimate relationship between ethnicity and indigenous rights, as well as looking at the implications of this on the Potiguara identity, the analysis looks at the indigenous school created by the Secretary of Education of the state of CearÃ, SEDUC, citing as evidence the way the group projected its indigenous way through this action, initiating a new phase characterized by the official recognition presented in the implantation of differentiated education. As a conclusion, it s possible to state that the Potiguara identity is being constructed from the relation between the process and the context of the interactions. Contrary to the belief in the total liberty of the social actors, this construction is based in a reality that is conditioned by cultural and historical elements of the group.
