RESUMO

This work was dedicated to explore high school pupils social representation of labor, job and profession. A program of vocational orientation in qualitative approach was used and six interviews were made, in order to verify which speeches refered to the theme. 20 students, 10 from a public school and 10 from a private school composed the sample, 15,18 years old in media and 17,10 years old. The social-economic level was estimated as high middle class for the private school group and low middle class to low class, for the public school group. All the sessions were developed in group, one and a half each one. The interviews, were analysed according to content analysis, generating a chart which expressed the results. The representation about labor, job and profession showed no differences in the two groups and were associated to ideological values implied in those categories. The results suggest that adolescent refer to the categories according to the status they have inside the culture. In this sense, they disregard objective conditions of the job market, and make their choices based on subjective criteria like satisfaction with the activity or success in their career.
