RESUMO

This dissertation presents a qualitative study about the use of virtual learning environments in higher education settings. It is a study of an undergraduate course, named Electrotecnics, code ET 616, lectured in Faculty of Electrical Engineering, at the State University of Campinas. In this course the classroom lectures were transferred to a virtual environment. The lectures in charge used WebCT to make the contents and all information related to the course available to the students. A survey was conducted to identify student responses to the new educational setting. This study documents the experience both the students and professors had when face-to-face lessons were replaced by a virtual environment setting. The data obtained by means of course evaluations were categorized, interpreted and described in this work. The results show that some of the undergraduate students oppose the use of this technology in the teaching and learning process. This study showed also that the lectures need more support in order to develop new pedagogical approaches using distance learning resources
