RESUMO
In Verão no Aquário, the space, a recurrent element in Lygia Fagundes Telles fiction, plays a significant role both in the characters composition and in the atmosphere that surrounds them. Through the space, aspects such as anxiety, isolation, imprisionment as well as the conflicting and repressed emotions that involve the protagonist are highlighted in a special way. In the novel, the sticky heat and the stifling feeling wich characterize Summer time affect Raíza, building up a pysical and a real sensation of a barrier the Aquário, (fish bowe), symbol of oppression and absence of on exit. Those elements immobilize and seclude the protagonist, preventing her from approaching her mother. In her innermost side, opposing feelings clash: love, anger, jeaulousy. In a confusing state between daydream and reality, she plunges into herself, in a attempt of clarifying the reason for her mixed feelings towards the mother so that by emerging, she can construct herself as an individual.
