RESUMO

This thesis is about the non-realization of the direct object co-referential, a phenomenon called null object (NO), in the Bahia Rural Portuguese (PBR), following the theoretical approach of the generative grammar. In the second plan, we analyze the use of the pronoun ELE (he), taking into account the exchange between this pronoun and the NO. It was investigated the contexts in which one and other strategies are required and the factors that condition them. It has been considered the trace of animacity of the antecedent DP as the most relevant factor in the choice of these strategies: when the trace of the antecedent is [- animate], the NO is licensed; when the trace is [+ animate], the direct object is realized (cf. cf.Bianchi and Figueiredo Silva, 1994; Cyrino, 1997; Kato, 1993; among others). However, in this work, we try to disclaim the relevance of this trace because it doesnt have any representation in the structure of the sentence in the Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The results of the quantitative analysis of the data show that the NO is not licensed when the antecedent DP is in the following syntactic positions: basic subject, indirect object, noun complement, noun adjunct and adverbial adjunct; but it is only licensed in the internal positions of the verb, with the similar thematic roles, theme/patient: direct object, oblique complement and derivative subject as well the topic, theme of the discourse. These results reveal that the antecedent DP and the NO might keep one relation of identity: to be generated in the internal position of the verb and to share the same thematic role, what is compatible to the requirements of the operations of ellipsis. So, we assume, in this work, that the NO is one ellipsis of the DP (cf. Cyrino, 1997), whose retrieval happens through the structural and thematic identity, discarding the possibility of being interpreted as pro or variable. The recovering of one DP in the positions in which the NO is blocked takes place through either the pronoun ELE (he) or the repetition of the DP. However, the pronoun ELE (he) is also available in the other contexts in which the NO is licensed, even to recover DPs with the trace [- animate]. It was also investigated data from the European Rural Portuguese (PER) and compared to the data of the PBR. The result of this comparison showed similar behavior between these two linguistic varieties, although the occurrence of the NO in islands is restricted to adverbial clauses in PER. The status of ellipsis, assumed in this thesis, is able to explain the data of both: PBR and PER.
