RESUMO

The aim of this dissertation is to understand the foundations of the poetry of Antônio Carlos de Brito. His work is situated mainly between 1967 and 1982, in the context of the military regime. The analysis is divided in four sections. First, we try to delineate the artistic behavior of the poet. The following section focuses on the books A palavra cerzida (1967) and Grupo escolar (1974). The gap between them is symptomatic of the differences that move one away from the other, although it does not mean that they do not maintain some connections. After analyzing the beginning of his work and examining, among other elements, the making of poetry, we move to the study of Beijo na boca (1975), Segunda classe (1975) and Na corda bamba (1978). We continue on the analysis of the poetic language, his way of creating a poem and, besides those, the apparent gratuity of his verses in these books. Lastly, the debate concentrates on the poems which, focusing on the social and political context of the 70s, approach the theme of repression and some inconsistencies in the conservative modernization of Brazil.
