RESUMO

Based on Natural Phonology Theory (STAMPE, 1973) and on proposals by Ingram (1976), Grunwell (1981/1982) and Teixeira (1985/1988), this study aims at describing the process of Glide Reduction in normal phonological acquisition in Brazilian Portuguese, tracing the maturational course of this process. The speech of two children 01 year old from Salvador ? Bahia, belonging to one social variety of Brazilian Portuguese, was longitudinally observed for a two year period, the children?s parents (or, at least one of them) had complete university education. After data collection and analysis, the following results were obtained: 1) the most used strategy was parcial syllabe elision; 2) child maturity is variable according to the kind of diphthong; 3) falling diphthongs are acquired earlier than rising diphthongs; 4) there wasn?t acquisitional difference between oral and nasal diphthongs. These results were compared to the fidings of Teixeira (1988b/1991), Lamprecht (1990) and Santos (2001) and contribute to the establishment of the Developmental Phonological Profile in Portuguese (PDFP).
