RESUMO

This study looks at the translation of humour in subtitling from a descriptive perspective. Through the analysis of 15 episodes of the North American series Sex and the City, this research aimed to describe and compare the strategies used for the Portuguese translation of verbal and visual humour in two different contexts: the DVD, whose Brazilian translator remains unknown, and the TV channel Multishow, whose translator was Daniela P.B. Dias. Basically, the series presents two types of humour: the so-called universal humour, through the theme of relationships, and the local humour, based on references to the American culture. The most common triggers of humour observed in the examples selected were puns and word plays as well as witty comments, with many occurrences of these cultural referents as the main element to activate humour. Considering the specificities of subtitling, a peculiar type of audiovisual translation, and the challenge that the translation of humor have always presented, this study sheds some light on the subtitling practice, associated to the translation of humour on TV and in DVD, a gap not sufficiently explored by researchers in Brazil. The research made it possible to demonstrate that the style of subtitles in the DVD undergo a greater level of formalization, through the omission and minimization of swear words and sexual references, and the use of more formal pronouns and syntactic structures, which eventually interferes in the recreation of humour and the reproduction of colloquialism of the original dialogues. In the TV subtitles, minimizations also take place, but in a lesser degree, whereas borrowings occur in a greater degree. It was also observed that the DVD subtitles tend to be longer than those on TV, a fact that should be taken into account in a comparative analysis between the two versions once the number of character may constrain the translators possibility of recreation. In general, the television version reveals greater freedom by the translator, with a larger number of adaptations and, because of that, more creative subtitles in terms of humour.
