RESUMO

This paper examines the description made by Levinas of subjectivity as responsibility, based on two works: âTotalità et Infiniâ (1961) and âAutrement quÂÃtre ou au-dela de lÂessence (1974), and has as an axis the notion of infinity as an ideatum that goes beyond the idea that considers it. The philosopher defines Ethics as âphilosophy firstâ, by seeking another form of intelligibility and meaning for the human beyond that proposed by Ontology, that is, beyond the âunderstanding of beingâ. In âTotalità et Infiniâ, being is split into two poles: the Same and the Other which relate to each other while keeping themselves apart. The concept of separation remains of fundamental importance throughout the work. Levinas expounds on the various forms of alterity which the Same faces up to; the body, the feminine and the Face that sets up Discourse, by calling on responsibility. Special attention is given to the question of Desire. In âAutrement quÂÃtreâ the Same is dealt with already completely strewn through by the Other, which decentralizes its movement of perseverance in being, which is âinter-esseâ, egoism, leading to a way out towards the Other which is given as passivity in the concreteness of a subject faced up to, and exposed to suffering. A sole subject, elected by the Good, in an insubstitutable way, to be responsible for the other â its true vocation consists of this. Other basic notions of this description are: proximity, sensibility, persecution, obsession, traumatism, which point in the direction of beyond Being
