RESUMO

The present work investigated the social relationships in the Cerrados marmoset (Callithrix penicillata). Behavioural data from a wild group helped to understand both within and between group social patterns. The analyses of the within-group agonistic interactions showed a hierarchic structure with the reproductive female as the dominant. There were no clear dominance between the adult males, and they, in general, dominated the other females and the juveniles. The males scent-mark patterns also did not suggest a possible dominance among them. The proximity, copula and grooming results indicated a social bond between one of the males and the dominant female, suggesting the groups putative breeding male, and without any apparent competition for this position. The results from infant-carrying, vigilance, play behaviour and agonism did not indicated any social cost to the putative breeding male, or any other male from the group. The group has a possible monogamic breeding system and familiar relations. However, other forms of between males competitions and extra pair copulation cannot be discarded. During intergroup encounters, agonistic interactions occurred in low rates. Agonism without physical aggression was directed primarily against same sex individuals, but females of the focal group also directed agonistic behaviour against extra group males that attempted copulation. Intergroup affiliative interactions occurred mainly in the form of copulations or attempted copulation, and all the focal groups adult animals participated, with the exception of the dominant female. Adult males copulated with the same extra group female during several occasions, what suggests sperm competition or the establishment of social bonds with neighbor females.
