RESUMO

Effective schistosomiasis control requires the conscious participation of the community, as established by the World Health Organization (WHO, 1994). The quality and degree of participation in the control of the endemic depend on community perceptions of living conditions. Such perceptions are based on the beliefs, attitudes, experiences and common sense wisdom that guide community behavior. With the aim of gathering knowledge on this wisdom and obtaining data useful to the explicitness of participation quality, we turned to social representation theory to comprehend the network of meanings that individuals and groups create in order to understand their practices in the world in which they live. We investigated the social representations of sewage system equipment in the village of PoÃo Comprido, which lies in the municipality of Macaparana, Pernambuco, Brazil, as an item of the schistosomiasis control process implemented under the coordination of the Public Health Nucleus at the Federal University of Pernambuco between 1997 and 2001. For access to the representations, we carried out a qualitative survey in which the application of the saturation criterion determined the quantum of subjects to be 31 (thirty-one). The survey was implemented by way of semi-structured individual interviews, which were analyzed using the Content Analysis resource and Thematic Analysis technique. The representations revealed that the community perceives the sewage system as an efficient utility for producing comfort and convenience for families, and does not associate the functions of the system with health issues, schistosomiasis as a singular illness, or its control. The community further considers sewage to be the main, active polluter of the nearby TiÃma River, in which a number of day-to-day activities are carried out
