RESUMO

New processes have been developed in the last years to produce near net shape metallic products with final or almost final dimensions. Thin slab continuous casting is a near net shape process to produce slabs with thickness convenient for direct rolling. Numerical modeling has been explored to simulate and to predict parameters of solidification of metaIs in order to improve industrial processes. In this work a numerical model is developed to analyze the effects of liquid core reduction during solidification to the microstructure of thin slabs. This analysis involves numerical simulation applying the finite element method. The finite element method has been chosen for its efficiency and the availability of commercial computer codes for simulation of thermal and structural analysis. The mathematical model is developed introducing modifications in one of these commercial codes (ANSYS) and it is able to simulate the solidification of thin slabs submitted to liquid core reduction. The reduction of thickness of the slab is taken into account by a movement and a distortion of the meshes. Applying specific equations, a subroutine has been developed to estimate the variation of dendrite arms spacing in the slabs. The numerical model is applied to simulate solidification processes of AI-4.5wt
