RESUMO

The main purpose of this work was to develop a mathematical model to investigate and improve metal/mold systems during solidification in casting and foundry processes. Initially, it was made a wide and critical review of principal aspects related to liquid/solid transformations. In sequence, the heat transfer involved in solidification was treated by means of the development of a numerical model based on finite difference technics turning it possible to simulate actual conditions of these processes, such as solidification kinetics and thermal behavior. Moreover, an experimental arrangement was developed in order to carry out a set of experiments of the mentioned processes and it was used to examine a number of factors influencing the progress of solidification. The results from the theoretical and experimental analysis of casting and foundry processes were compared and the agreement observed was good in all cases examined. In both situations (casting and foundry) the model has proved to be an useful and powerful tool to analyse the solidification of metals. In adition, this modeling was applied to optimize some of the parameters of metal/mold systems (mold thickness, thermal resistance across the metal/mold interface, mold geometry, pouring superheat, etc) and on the basis of the obtained results, it was established an improved model of metal/mold system
