RESUMO

From cases of slavery by debt in contemporaneous agriculture, in this project I interpret the process of reconstruction of workers identity dimensions in Cocais area, in Maranhão, particularly in the cities of Presidente Dutra e Dom Pedro. The targets of this study are the workers submitted to slavery by debt outside this State, between 1990 and 2008. In this analysis I intend to evidence how I approximate myself with the investigated phenomenon and how it was done the weaving of the wires that make this search. This investigation goes on when I identify, though bibliographic and documental sources, the historic relationships that the rural workers from Maranhão and from the reported area created with this phenomenon of slavery by debt, mainly, in the Amazonic area. Then, my analysis stays in Cocais area, its history and memory about rural workers life and quotidian. From the oral report and pieces of memory of the investigated workers are interpreted, in the last part of this project, what it is revealed about slavery by debt and about the identity dimensions that emerge from this historic people.
