RESUMO

The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of genotype X dietary protein level, by reaction norm models, on the period of growth and evaluate the performance of two strains of quails belonging to Breeding Program Poultry of the Federal University of Viçosa. Body weights were evaluated at 21, 35 and 42 days of age, with levels 24 to 33% crude protein (CP) in the diet. At 42 days of age were evaluated 268 quail UFV-1 strain and 288 of UFV-2 strain, to determine the productive performance. Evaluations to obtain the reaction norms and genetic parameters were performed in the program WOMBAT and analysis of variance of carcass data in SAS. Norms of reaction indicate that the strain UFV-1 is less sensitive to the environment that the strain UFV-2. Genetic evaluations performed for quail fed diets containing different protein levels do not allow the prediction of genetic values valid for all levels of CP. The strain UFV-1 did not present interaction gender X PB for body weight and carcass characteristics studied. The strain UFV-2 showed gender X PB interaction for body weight at slaughter, carcass weight and weight of the leg. All parameters showed significant effects of sex, except for weight and yield back to UFV-2 strain. The females had higher body weight to males. It is concluded that the assessment should be made at the level where the quail will be created. There was interaction genotype X environment for both strains studied. Can be used diet containing 24% CP for meat quails with no loss in body weight and slaughter weight and carcass yield and parts thereof, provided that it is properly balanced with amino acids. It is suggested that Slaughter is done in ages up to 42 days to reduce the difference in weight and carcass yield between the genders.
