RESUMO

The concept of competence has been studied extensively over the last several decades. In the Middle Ages it was already being applied to the area of law. In 1965 the American linguist Noam Chomsky used the concept in relationship to the learning of languages. In Brazil, Almeida Filho (1993, 1999) introduced this concept in the area of teaching Applied Linguistics, when he proposed a model of five minimal competences for foreign language teachers: implicit, linguistic-communicative, theoretical, applied and professional competencies. The first four of these competences have already been studied in this Masters Program in Applied Linguistics, so the present study completes this research, and examines the last competency, related to professionalism. The focus of this study is on the characteristics of professional competence, including the individuals attributes and the context in which he works. The present research focuses on the question of the professional competence of foreign language teachers. It is an exploratory and qualitative research using a questionnaire and an interview. Triangulation was achieved through the analysis of P1 and P2s classroom recordings. In addition, the individuals behavior, self-knowledge, and interaction with the environment where he works were studied. Professional competence is comprised of four dimensions: specific knowledge, and political, ethical and aesthetic attributes. According to Le Boterf (2003), the teacher should be competent, use information and knowledge in a professional context, integrate and combine multiple and heterogeneous information and skills, be able to transfer knowledge from one situation to another one, and make instruction relevant to his students. The teacher should also be deeply involved and engaged in his job of teaching a foreign language. Finally, professionalism includes a focus on contemporary professional ethics. In summary, this study examines concepts of knowledge, knowing how to use that knowledge, and behaving as a foreign language teacher based on this knowledge. In conclusion, the object of this study, professional competence, is a dynamic, evolutionary, every-changing concept.
