RESUMO

Objectives. We aimed at analyzing health procedures followed by workers in small printing industries according to social representations of owners and workers, as well as identifying how programs of occupational health and medical control (PCMSOs) are suitable to the realities and needs of the small printing industry companies. Methods. Exploratory, descriptive, multiple-site study. A qualitative inquiry was used on interviews. Twenty industries were examined between May and September/2002, where the number of workers were between 11 to 46. One owner and two workers of each printing industry were interviewed. Documental analyses were made by using PCMSOs, correlation with environmental risks prevention program (PPRA) and observational analysis. The interviews were studied by using the collective subjected discourse. Results. According to the social actors discourse, there is the idea that the company is like a family extension. They emphasize the compulsory need of medical exams, prevention of diseases and accidents, and also the reduction of workers on leave as a benefit from PCMSOs. In the speeches of some owners there is evidence of their lack of engagement with health procedures and emphasis on the idea that there are no occupational hazards, as well as the view of PCMSO being unsuitable to their reality. The use of gasoline and kerosene as cleaning products for machines and floor was noticed in 63% of the printing industries. Conclusions. The workers health procedures in small printing companies that have been done at São Paulo City do not correspond, in general, to the expectations of both the workers and their employers.
