RESUMO

The involvement of women in physical activities has been more frequent. Owing to the high level of competition within sport practice, many women have been submitted to exhausted programs of physical training, thus, being at a higher risk to develop reproductive dysfunctions, such as, menstrual irregularities and, also, infertility. Stress due to physical activity itself, psychological stress, low availability of energetic sources, reductions in corporal weight and fat body mass have been on the stage as causes for the reproductive disorders associated to physical exercise. This study aimed to investigate the repercussions of the aerobic physical exercise over the reproductive function in women volleyball players. Then, female athletes were evaluated regarding to the development of menstrual irregularities and, to the behavior of serum cortisol level after 12 weeks of exclusive volleyball practice and after 12 weeks of volleyball associated to an aerobic physical workout. Serum cortisol level, as a marker of stress, was measured before the study and after 12 and 24 weeks of study. 10 female athletes from a volleyball team within 12 to 17 years of age were evaluated. Although these athletes have reached a meaningful increase in their VO2max, revealing the efficacy of the aerobic training, besides the decrease in body mass index and the fat body mass, neither menstrual irregularities nor changes in serum cortisol were observed. Theses results are against those seen in the scientific literature, suggesting that a bigger set of players is necessary to evaluate the influence of physical exercise over the reproductive function under these conditions.
