RESUMO

The Soil Vapor Extraction (EVS) is a technique frequently applied in the remediation of contaminated vadose zones by volatile compounds such as gasoline and chlorinated organic solvents, as well as on the gas migration, as methane for example. The procedure consists on creating apressure gradient in the soil, inducing preferencial flow of gases and vapours. This work presents the gas flow equations in the porous media and compares the corresponding results against established groundwater flow. The soil phase equilibrium equations are analysed under the light of the controlling factors over EVS. A simplified model describing vapour extraction is developed from those basic equations. Assuming homogeneous soil and instantaneous equilibrium amongst phases, the presently proposed model also takes into account the effects brought about by the presence of co-solvents. Finally, the relevance of some parameters such as organic carbon fraction, soil humidity and co-solvent fraction are analysed under one typical application case...
