RESUMO

The efficiency of the Fenton s reagent was evaluated in the remediation of organochlorine pesticide contaminated soils with "Drins". The Fenton s reagent is one of the so-called Advanced Oxidation Processes. The remediation study followed the steps: (1) Mapping of the contaminated area; (2) Bath degradation tests; (3) Degradation tests in soil packed column and ( 4) Percolation tests in soil packed column. Mapping of the contaminated area, located in Paulínia-SP, was made by soil samples taken at 13 different places, between 0 and 1 m depth. These soil samples showed a high contamination level. Aldrin, for example, reached values between 0,008 up to 1468 mg/g dry soil, and Dieldrin reached values between 0,001 up to 660,9 mg/g dry soil. Highest levels of Drins occurred in samples with high level of organic carbon, indicating the organic matter is the major responsible by the sorption of these compounds by the soil. The employment of the Fenton s reagent in the remediation of organochlorine pesticide contaminated soils was very efficient. In relation to bath degradation tests using excess of H2O2, it was obtained around 75% of degradation in 168 hours (7 days). In relation to the soil packed column (10 cm depth), there were 61% and 85% of degradation of Aldrin and Endrin, respectively. In an adensed column (50 cm depth), with a low permeability and compacted soil, there were 45% and 59% of degradation of Aldrin and Endrin, respectively. DDT, DDE and DDD were also found in these samples. Aldrin and Endrin presented the highest degradation rates and produced Dieldrin and Endrin Aldehyde. DDT was also degraded with an increase in the concentration of DDE, which is mainly generated in highly oxidized conditions.
