RESUMO

The studied area is comprised of The Forte Orange, SÃo Paulo, Forno da Cal, Pilar, Jaguaribe and Sossego in Itamaracà Island. The study aimed to know the relationship between shore dynamic agents and the sediment interstitial fauna. Monthly collections of interstitial fauna were carried out between November 2003 and October 2004. The samples of the interstitial fauna were collected at the foreshore in an imaginary square of 1m X 1m with 5 replicas collected at the edge and in the center of it, by lowertide, with 360 samples altogether. Sediment samples collected in transect on a monthly-basis totalized 72 collections. Every shore profile had its graphic done according to the absolute referential of each one. The meiofauna was shaped in an evolutionary order by: Nematodes, Rotifers, Tardigrades, Polychaetes, Oligochaete, Acari, Ostracode, Copecod and Mollusca. Being Nematodes, Oligochaete and Copecod representatives of the dominant fauna; Polychaetes and Ostracodes abounding; Rotifers as vulgar and finally Tardigrade, Acari and Mollusca as rare. The study of how quaternary sediments were distributed brought out facies occurrence on quartz sand fine to medium. Morphology reveals shores bound to an erosive process; Shores of SÃo Paulo, Forno da Cal, Pilar, Jaguaribe, Sossego and the Fort Orange with a depositional feature. The sedimentary balance variation on shores was determining for the quantitative composition of meiofauna all over the period.
