RESUMO

This work analyses the relationship between changes in the white goods industry in Brazil in the nineties, as well as its impacts on the employment profile, starting by a brief discussion on the global production chain restructuring. The white goods industry has been submitted to an intensive concentration and internationalization process, all over the world. Today, this industry is characterized by the prevalence of a reduced number of big multinational corporations: the five biggest firms together are responsible for almost 80% of the world sales. New strategies of multinational corporations include the increase of productive capacities in emerging markets in the form of foreign direct investments, joint-ventures, or the acquisition of local enterprises. In Brazil, in the second half of the nineties, the more important firms were sold to the world leaders, and in 2000 the country was the third world producer of stoves and the fifth in the refrigerators’ production. . The assets reconfiguration of the sector has intensified the restructuring of the productive process, with deep impacts on the employment profile. We could observe in the RAIS (Annual Social Indicators Series) data a continuous fall in the number of employees as the production level increases. Statistics also have revealed a notorious increase in the educational level and a deep fall of the wages.
