RESUMO

The purpose of this research is to analyze the Project of Harm Reduction carried out in the Female Penal Colony of Recife by the Center of Prevention to Dependence, questioning its results and its relation to: self-esteem increase and health improvement of the prisoners that participated as harm reducers; incorporation of harm reduction practice into everyday situations related to the matter of drugs use and its consequences in the Colony; and the use of the Project activities as a democratic space of shelter and encouragement to reflection. Developing an ex-post evaluation, we took the qualitative methodology as reference, using semi-structured interview on the group of prisoners that participated as harm reducers in the period from 2001 to 2003. As an alternative for facing problems due to drug use in the Colony and with a democratic and of social inclusion mark, the accomplishment of the Project allowed the development of practical actions on prevention and harm reduction areas and contributed to debate and reflection, which led to adoption of less harmful behaviors and conducts, which promoted health and rise in the level of harm reducersâ selfesteem
