RESUMO

The following paper reports the application of the conceptual and methodological basis of the study of informal social network (ISN) to propose, control and evaluate the experiences of organizational change. The research work, developed in an information technology company based in Bahia/Brazil, with 12 years of experience and approximately 60 direct employees - involved 3 phases that corresponded to an experiment. In the first, a questionnaire was applied, to map out the informal social networks. In the second phasis, supported by the information collected and with the use of diagrams generated by software UCINET 6.0, as well as data from research investigation of the companys history and the professional profile of the employees, a number of interventions were planned. During a period of 12 months, these changes were introduced in the company. During the third stage, new questionnaires were applied, with the objective of evaluating the changes introduced, their impact on the ISN and the way which these networks could help understand the difficulties, rhythms and results of the change processes. It became evident in the first phasis that the mecanisms of unfolding the strategic matters and the implementation of the organizational changes were not reverberating in the necessary intensity to involve the company as a whole. After interventions, we could verify that all the studied ISN showed an increase in the density and a decrease in the distance between the actors, as well as a better perception, understanding and expectations of the organizational change cenario of the actors, when we compared the results of all phases. Finally, the study clearly points out how the knowledge of the ISN could promote more effectiveness in the organizational change processes, as it supplies a methodology to link the study of these two organizational phenomena.
