RESUMO

The purpose of this dissertation is to explain the self-employed economy existing at the âCalÃadÃo dos Mascatesâ, in SÃo JosÃ, Recife, that creates a social net in order to generate their financial independence. After the big boom of globalization in the 90s, the capitalist economy is giving a lot of emphasis on the liberal economy. Many nations have opened their boarders to the international trade and investments, together with that, many countries have appeared in the world scenario. Not all countries were ready to this progress, not only related to investments but technology as well. Because of that, one part of society was not included in this economic development, the self-employed people. The main objective of this dissertation is that the state and local government use all the information they can find here which was a result of many researches. This dissertation also tells about the history of Pernambuco, from hereditary captaincies up to âmascatesâ showing Recifeâs vocation as a trade center. Many authors were used as reference, the well-recognized ones by the academy. The research methodology will describe the object, starting from personal observation and will analyze all the data. It is expected that the state and local government interferes on that economy using the social capital that exists there. It was also used field research to build this dissertation because itâs talking about an empirical investigation that considers as its object a study in a specific place. In addition, it was made document research (photos, registers) and bibliographic research. This way we could have a bigger idea of a case study, an organization of thoughts that contribute to obtain a case study, generalizations and world visions. This research was built based on the information given by the traders and clients of the âCalÃadÃo dos Mascates (CM)â. One hundred and thirty-five people were interviewed and answered a survey; eighty were traders and fifty-five were clients. Many people in the self-employed economy live as clandestine so most of them didnât want to reveal their identity in spite of that all the information collected was very useful to build the strategies of this dissertation
