RESUMO

The industrial development experimented in the last decades gave rises to the generation of large amounts of inorganic wastes. Most residues are buried in land-fills, others are stired in hangar, which is a costly and envirinmentally unsatisfactory procedure. In order to overcome the social and environmental problems associated to the generation and disposal of industrial wastes it is necessary to develop a process that allows recycling the wastes through its transformation in useful materials. In this work we have analyzed a mineralogical composition of porcelain stoneware polishing by-product (SIPP) from a local industry. Initially, syntering blocks were produced starting from SIPP. The mineralogical composition of SIPP allowed be employed as a raw material to produce vitreous materials (SIPPBORAX). This glasses could also be used as raw material for the synthesis of frits. Finally, the SIPP could be used to prepare composite SIPP/gypsum. These by-products and new products of the SIPP were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, differential thermal analysis (DTA) and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
