RESUMO

Using light of the same wavelength as the u.v. range of the solar spectrum at Earth s surface, we have studied the photochemical reactions in chloroform solution of commercially available polybutadiene with carbonylic organic compounds. The carbonylic compounds were sorted according to the energy of their (n, p*) excited state in relation to the energy of the (p, p*) excited state of the polymer. This was done in order to study the difference between photo-initiated and photosensitized reactions. We also studied the analytical methods which may be used to identify the structure of polybutadiene and the products obtained in the photoisomerization, photocyclization, photocross-linking and chain-cission reactions. We characterized and identified the changes of polybutadiene after the photochemical reactions by spectroscopic methods (i.r. and H-NMR) as well as by other techniques, such as: gel fraction, swelling degree and glass-transition temperature. We suggest that acetone and n-butanal behave as photosensitizers while benzophenone behaves as photo-initiator.
