RESUMO

Several studies have established relation between a myriad of disturbs and abnormal levels of anger. We study the anger as being one of the possible emotions related to gastritis and esophagus illnesses. The research has the objective of verifying the expression of anger and the chronic anger in patients with gastritis and esophagus illnesses. We also compared the results among genders and ages. The present study was accomplished with 109 patients, being 41 males and 68 females from the Ambulatório de Cirurgia do Aparelho Digestivo, at the Hospital e Maternidade Assunção. The selected age group ranges from 20 to 60 year-old patients. The Instruments used were Spielberg s State- Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), semi..directed interviews and patients medical files. Our results show that these patients experienced anger frequently, feeling frustrated and not receiving the treatment they expected to. They are impulsive people, with great sensitivity to critics and evaluations, being men the ones who present these traits more often, also being more Common among people in the 20 to 29 and 40 to 49 group age. Both among males and females anger has been repressed and directed inwards. People in the group age of 50 to 60 seem to have more control over anger, whereas this control in the 20 to 29 age group is lower. Men and women present chronic anger, but it is more Common in men. The rates of chronic anger are high in all age groups, but they are higher among the 40 to 49 age group. The theoretical recital used was the Analytical Psychology of Carl Gustav Jung, which points out the interrelation between body-mind. Therefore, anger in these patients is not elaborated, but experienced physically, through the symptoms of gastritis and esophagitis
