RESUMO

The present study analyzed the gender relation experienced by women between 20 to 49 years old, residents of Vila Mocambinho II, in Teresina-PI, and how the matters of gender are handled by the health teams of the Programa de SaÃde da FamÃlia (PSF) in the development of prevention measures from HIV/AIDS. The data collection was performed from march to November 2006 and in the study, with a qualitative approach, the method of technique triangulation was applied: a) individual interviews, guided by a semi-structured script, in order to identify womenâs HIV/AIDS knowledge levels, besides inquiring how the gender matter, experienced in the relationship with the partner, interferes in the vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.; b) interviews with focal groups, dealing with subjects of little profundity in the responses furnished to the individual interviews; c) observation of the health team practices in the development of prevention measures, in order to identify possible gender approaches used by the PSF professionals. It was detected that women have a reasonable level of information about HIV/AIDS, the transmission factors and the ways to prevent it from occuring, and that the education and income level, and also the stable union with the partner were the identified variables that interfere in this process. The unequal relation of gender experienced by women, built and familiarized by society as well as strengthened by PSF, interferes in the negotiation process of condom use, especially, when it has mainly a contraception use. We found at last, that due to having a biologicist formation, the PSF professionals perform only occasional prevention strategies from HIV/AIDS with women
