RESUMO

This is a cross-sectional study with a randomized choice of individuals aiming at studying the occurrence of central and peripheral neurologic disorders among lead workers whose lead level in the blood (PbB) and delta-aminolevulinic acid in the urine (ALAU) are below the Brazilian threshold limits (60μg/dl and 15 mg/l, respectively). Thus, twenty workers, whose PbB and ALAU values were below the threshold limits at present and in the past two years, were selected at random at a battery plant in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The workers were submitted to a peripheral nerve conduction study and a variation of the WHO Neurobehavioral Core Test Battery. The results were compared with those obtained for workers of a control group. The lead workers showed decrease ofvelocity conduction of the radial nerves, as well as memory, mood and motor coordination disorders. Comparing the lead workers with the control group, in relation the above mentioned results, a significant difference was observed (p-value <0.01). Ou the grounds of the fitting of a linear regression model, one might suggest that the PbB threshold limit be reduced from 60 to 32 μg/dl.
