RESUMO

The objective of this work was to compare the health and physiological quality of double crosses maize hybrids seeds obtained from F1 and F2 generations of single crosses hybrids. Field trials were carried out at the Federal University of Lavras â UFLA in two sowing dates, september and december 2001. Four isolated plots were used in each sowing date to produce seeds of the double crosses DKB333/AG9012 and DKB901/AG9012. In two plots the female parental consisted of the F1 generations of the single crosses DKB333 e DKB901 and the male parental was the single crosses AG 9012. On the other two plots, the female parental consisted of F2 generations of the single crosses DKB333 e DKB901. The following agronomic characteristics were measured: Plant height, ear insertion, ear weight and seed production. Seeds, size 22, were used to analyse: germination, cold test, artificial aging, velocity of emergency, tray emergency, dry weight matter and health analysis by the blotter test. The experimental design was completely randomized using a factorial with two hybrids, two generations (F1 and F2), two sowing date and four replications. The results showed a 28.7% decrease in seed production when, the female parental came from the F2 generation instead of the F1 generation. All physiological assays showed a better performance for seeds obtained from F1 generations of the single crosses. The same was true for the health tests. The two sowing dates had no effect on seed quality.
