RESUMO
The thesis addresses some questions regarding the implications of a process of commercialization on cultural products. This is done through an analysis of the comic Viz, the most famous British adult comic ever. It can be seen that this comic went through a commercial process that made it sell around 1,000,0000 copies at the end of 1980s, ten years after its first printing run of 150 copies. This is a clear example of a product that managed to change from a small-scale production to a large one, which also implied a shift of audience and in the network of distribution. Thus, it is important to investigate how Viz changed its content and format throughout the years in order to be adapted to a more commercially based culture. The method used was to trace the changes made in the commodity throughout its history to understand in which ways a shift to a large audience also represented a shift in the content of Viz. It is clear that the understanding of cultural products should not be found only in the analysis of their discourse; it needs to include both their positions in the market and relationship with other products
