RESUMO

The companies deal with programs and projects simultaneously, in a complex environment where financial, human, and material resources are shared. In the worldwide market and Brazil, it is not different. It has been observed an increasing adoption of project management practices in the companies. Thus, the manager of portfolio starts to be central figure in this context, because he/she is responsible for managing and executing activities that approach the strategical level of the organization to the operational level of the programs and projects. Despite this, there is no consolidated standard of abilities of this professional. Based on this necessity, the present research was done to investigate and to describe the main abilities of this actor. The methodology consisted of a mapping of literature and, in special, of the standards launched and maintained by Project Management Institute (PMI). As first outcome, it has launched a proposal of Model of Technical Abilities for the PortfÃlio Manager. The model has 117 (one hundred and seventeen) abilities whose were submitted to an evaluation of Brazilian project management. First eleven specialists (judges) were searched and the results indicated that, in the perception of those professionals, the model would be very useful for the organizations. The second research, using an internet website, collected the perception of 50 project management professionals from all over the country. The results have shown that the model proposed has a high level of acceptability for these professionals. Although initial, the proposed model can serve as a reference for the companies who want to systemize their processes of portfolio management as well as for the professionals who want to act as portfolio managers.
