RESUMO

This is an experimental work for the development of a loop reactor for hydrogenation of vegetable oil. The reactor system has a cilindrical body, a diafragm pump for recirculation of the suspension catalystic, an heat exchanger for heating/cooling and a venturi ejector to mix the reacting components. This ejector maintains a continuous and uniform suspension of solids (catalyst) and hydrogen in oil thus avoiding a mechanical agitator. Temperatures of inlet and outlet at the heat exchanger were measured in order to describe the behaviour of that piece of equipment during heating/cooling of the reacting suspension. Thermal behaviour was described in terms of non dimensional parameters and heat transfer coefficients. Catalyst concentration was in the range 0.01 % to 0,05% weigth. Flow rate of suspension was 6 I/min and the hydrogen was 3.09 I/min . Flow behaviour didn t show dependance from catalyst concentration but was important for heat transfer. Hydrogenation was conducted whit success at rates of the order of up to 60 iodine value (IV) units reduction per 90 minutes.
