RESUMO

This study was developed in response to the issue raised "Did the implementation of The Program for Protection of Pregnant-PPG improve prenatal care and maternal and child indicators in Sergipe?" It is an analytical research study, ecological and exploratory based on secondary data, aiming to verify the impact on maternal and child health in the period 2004 to 2006. The study population corresponds to pregnant women registered in the PPG, using data from The Information System of the Humanization Program in Pre-Natal and Birth- SISPRENATAL, The Information System about Mortality-SIM, The Information System about Live Births-SINASC and Data Bank of the Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional Children-APAE. According to the proposed objectives for this study, it was concluded that: i) the PPG promoted an improvement in data records aggregating technology to the provided prenatal care; ii) there was no reduction in the percentage of any Pre-natal consultation and an increase was observed at the number of pre-natal consultations; iii) it was not possible to establish the gestational age at the time of the first consultation; iv) in the results regarding infant mortality there was a reduction of deaths due to bacterial infection and respiratory diseases, v) and about maternal mortality it was evidenced a significant drop in the number of maternal deaths between the years 2004 and 2006, possibly the PPG contributed to this decrease. Concerning the proportion of live births with low birthweight, there was improvement in the quality of data registration, with reduction of the ignored data.
