RESUMO

The asthma prevalence has been increasing all over the world, and epidemiological researches has been necessary in order to know the factors related to this increase. Standardized questionnaires for population researches are necessary so that we can compare the prevalence data among the research centers, making further analysis possible. For that, a standardized questionnaire was developed as part of ISAAC (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood) project. The aim of this work was to study the asthma prevalence in adolescents from Goiânia. So, we applied the first part of the questionnaire about asthma symptoms and diagnosis, standardized by ISAAC project to adolescents aged 13-14 years old, registered in public and private schools. A total of 2.689 adolescents answered the questionnaire in class and the return rate of it was 97,2%. We excluded 242 incomplete questionnaires, remaining 2447. The prevalence of diagnosed asthma was 10,6%. A presumptive diagnosis of asthma was based on having had 4 or more attacks of wheezing in the last 12 months, or 1-3 wheezing episodes in addition to night awakening due to wheezing, nocturnal cough or after exercise wheezing. Considering these criteria there were 17,1% probable asthmatic adolescents. We conclude that the prevalence of asthma in adolescents from Goiânia was 10,6%, according to other Brazilian cities. Considering probable asthma, this rate reached 17,1%, revealing subdiagnosis of this chronic condition
