RESUMO

This research, of the functionalist type, named Prefixes derived from prepositions in texts of the Portuguese of the 17th and 18th centuries, is intended to identify the processes and principles of grammaticalization applicable to the change preposition >prefix, as well as to analyze the semantic aspects of such a change, based on the theories of localism and prototypes. The corpus used consisted of 41 letters from the 17th century (Letters from Maranhão, by Antônio Vieira, 8580 lines) and 127 letters from th 18th century (Bahian Letters from the 18th century, 5500 lines). These two centuries were compared with the etymologic data found, mainly, in Cunha (1991) and Romanelli (1964) and with the data from the 14th century that referred to the prepositions analyzed by Poggio (2002). It was considered proper to complement the analysis with the new proposal of multi-systemic study of Castilhos (2003) lingustic change, because the fundamentals of the grammaticalization theory related to the principle of unidirectionality, which includes the premise of semantic weakening or fading of those items that acquire a greater grammatical character, have been severely criticized by the contemporary literature about grammaticalization and also because of the difficulties found to prove the applicability of such fundamentals in all cases analyzed involving the change preposition >prefix.
