Práticas docentes de professores de língua inglesa: facilitadores e barreiras ao desenvolvimento da criatividade

RESUMO

In this study we investigated the perceptions of English teachers regarding the extent to which they consider they have been applying educational strategies to favor the development and expression of creativity among their pupils. We also researched the barriers appointed by teachers to the promotion of appropriate conditions to the development and expression of creativity. Furthermore, this study also evaluated if there were differences in the perception of teachers divided according to the variables gender and teaching experience to favor creativity in the classroom and in the appointed barriers for creativity. A hundred teachers from a private English Center in the Federal District of Brazil participated in this research. The participants answered a questionnaire composed of three sections: the first one had the purpose of tracing the biographic and professional data of the sample; the second included an Inventory of Educational Practices that favor Creativity; the third one presented a checklist of barriers to creativity in which the teachers should choose the ones they judged to find in their practices in class. All the four factors used to evaluate the perceptions of teachers obtained very high scores. We observed that the main barriers appointed were pupils with learning difficulties, lack of interest on the content taught, high number of classes and other activities under the teachers responsibility, putting a constraint on the preparation time of classes, high number of students in each class. The analysis of the answers indicated that the variables of gender and teaching experience did not influence the results achieved. Such homogeneity is, possibly, the result of permanent training and evaluations in which the teachers are engaged, reinforcing what the specialized literature points out as effective strategies to the development of creativity in the educational context.
