RESUMO

Geological field activities are essential tools in the learning process of Geology, specially when teaching is limited to just one geological discipline whose characteristic is to be simultaneously introductory and conclusive (Introductory Geology). The influence that field activities play in the Introductory Geology discipline learning of the IGC-UFMG Geography graduation course is characterized by adopting - as theoretical presupposition - the basis that frame the geological and geographical reasoning, and the identification of pedagogical roles played by those activities. Field practice in Geology Fundamentais constitutes a unique oportunity for the student to approach to the variety of geological inquiries of Nature and can perform different formative tasks, such as: the contextualized learning of pre-required contents; the acquisition of abilities and techniques in identifying and mapping earth materiais and, at last, the development of cognitive operations essential for understanding geodynamic processes and Man/Nature relationship. Field activities are thought to constitute a methodology of teaching-Iearning essential to the development of a set of constituent elements of the kind of historical and hermeneutic based reasoning typical to Geology, distinguishing for that purpose, the researching category activities. The inductive category is however the most common in the geological field activities in Geology Fundamentais, what is justified by the discipline strong curriculum framing. The training function is always present in field practices, exercising a secondary influence regarding inductive and motivating categories. Adopting categorization of field didactic roles contributes to define more appropriate field teaching strategies, concerning both didactic and curriculum intended aims, to plan activities themselves and to establish result evaluation criteria
