RESUMO

Water and energy represent important needs for humanity and, nowadays, lots of debates focus on how to reduce the effects of unavailability of these resources on several regions around the world. In Brazil, the Northeast region is the main example about the increase of poverty, starvation, and communities depression created by the scarcity of potable water. But there is still hope, the existence of large wind power resources, identified in most areas of the Northeast, and also the abundant presence of groundwater indicates that it is feasible to try a solution that uses wind turbines to generate electricity and drive submersible centrifugal pumps, mainly in remote sites far from the grid. The principal goal of the work is to present a procedure for mapping the wind electric pumped water in an area. A case study for a region in the State of Bahia exemplifies the use of the mapping procedure to identify areas where it is possible to use wind turbines to supply water to small communities located far from the grid. This thesis presents a computational tool for the simulation of wind electric pumped water and the analyses of the wind characteristics, main inputs for the program, based on existent wind atlases and available surface wind data
