RESUMO

The population from the Northeastern region of Brazil origined from the mixture of Caucasian Europeans, Africans and Indians. However, despite of many studies done with Brazilian populations, we know few about the contribution of each ethnic group in the formation of the actual Northeastern population infered by the polymorphism of the HLA loci. In this study, a sample from the population of the State of Pernambuco was characterized using polymorphism of HLA-DRB1, -DQA1 and âDQB1 loci and possible associations were verified in the DRB1 and DQB1 loci with bancroftian filariasis and in the DQB1 locus with schistosomiasis mansoni in the same population. The alleles DRB1 *0701 (0,1390), DQA1*0102 (0,1954) and DQB1*0201 (0,2128) were the most frequent found in this population. 113 haplotypes were identified, and the most frequent in the population of Pernambuco was DRB1*0701-DQA1*0201-DQB1*0201 (0,1234). The results show that the population of Pernambuco is genetically next to Caucasian European populations and far from Africans and Indians, although, in this population, typical alleles of Indian and African populations have been found. Association between HLA-DQB1 locus and schistosomiasis mansoni was not found in the studied population. Associations of susceptibility were found, confered by DRB1*0301 and DQB1*0402 alleles, and of protection, confered by DRB1*0102, DQB1*0401 e DQB1*0608 alleles, to the development of the bancroftian filariasis in the population of the State of Pernambuco
