RESUMO

In this dissertation the presence/absence of the poetie genre in the school is studied talking as its corpora school textbooks in the period between 1950 and 1990, retired teachers speceh and active teachers talking on te reading of poetry in the classroom and Letters student-teachers reports on lessons observed at the Federal University of Rondonia. On tese field notes te main object of investigation was if the genre was focussed. The study reveals that in teachers memories and in the textbooks analyzed the poetic genre was strongly present in the past. A closer analysis further pointed to the fact the poems were tematically restricted to patriotic sentiment and moral preaching. In the 60 s and 70 s the genre almost desappeared grom school textbooks staging a come back in the 80 s and 90 s. The data also show that the poetic genre has, in actual practic, been denied to the students with a promise today of . returning to the schools manuais and to teacher s language concerns.
