RESUMO

The aim of this paper was to make a bilateral analysis of a training program effect based on the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation. We used two diagonals of the Kabat s method of upper extremity in the electromiographic activity, in the Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (MIP), in the Maximal Expiratory Pressure (MEP) and in the Thoracometry. The muscles analyzed were the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), upper trapezius (UT) and pectoralis major clavicular part (PMC). Fourteen female subjects took part in this study between 20 and 29 years old (X = 22.9; SD = 2.9), considered clinically normal. The training program was carried out regularly three times a week, for four weeks, three series of six repetitions with the maximum repetition of 80%. The electric muscle register was obtained before and afier the training. The equipments used were the BIO-LOGIC surface electrodes, a four channel biological signal acquisition model (Lynx), a board AlD (CAD 1026 Lynx) and a specific software (Aqdados - Lynx). The signals were normalized by the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC = 100%). The MIP and MEP measures were obtained bya monovacuumeter with operational interval of + 300 to - 300 cmH20. The MIP was carried out close to the Residual Volume, the MEP close to the Total Pulmonary Capacity and the Thoracometry with a measuring tape involving the subject thorax. The statistical procedures used were designed through the non-parametric analysis. The tests of Friedman, Wilcoxon and DMS for a significance levei of p<0.05 for the Electromiography values, maximal respiratory pressure measures and thoracometry. The variable results obtained before and afier the training program through the electromiographic registers showed no significant difference for the control group. However, the trained group increased their electric activity for the following muscles: SCM-R, SCM-L, UT -L, PMC-R and PMC-L, in the inspiratory as well as in the expiratory phase afier the training period. There was no difference in the maximal respiratory pressures for the control group. But there was a significant increase of the maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures for the trained group afier the training period. For the thoracometry measures, there was no difference between the results of the control group before and afier training. But for the trained group, there was a significant value increase afier training. From the results obtained in this study, with the experimental conditions used, we can conclude that afier the training there was an increase in the muscle electric activity studied except for the UT-R. There were also muscle respiratory power and thoracic mobility increases. This suggests that the training with upper extremity in the diagonals of Kabat s Method of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitatíon can be recommended as a physiotherapy resource to the respiratory capacity development.
