RESUMO

This study aimed to measure the linkage effects and multipliers of Paraná State sectors, focusing the broiler production and slaughter sectors. We used the input-output analysis. Initially, an input-output matrix was build up for the Paraná State for 2005. To check the linkage effects of the Paraná State sectors, the Rasmussem- Hirschman linkage indices, the field of influence, and the pure linkage indices were used. The output, income, and employment multipliers were calculated to measure the response of the economy to a change in final demand of a sector. Rasmussem-Hirschman linkage indices showed that the broiler slaughter and production sectors presented the most important backward effects in Paraná State. The broiler production sector is also a key sector in terms of forward effects, but it was not observed for the broiler slaughter sector, since its production is mainly intended to final demand. The field of influence confirmed that the broiler production is among the sectors with the greatest impact on the buyers, while the broiler slaughter figures among the ones with most influences on the suppliers. The pure linkage indices confirmed that these two are key sectors in Paraná State, the broiler production as supplier, and the broiler slaughter as demander; however, the pure total linkage indices showed that only the second should be considered a key sector. These two sectors generated the greatest impact on total production of the Paraná State for each monetary unit increased in their final demand. In terms of the income multiplier, only the broiler production is among the main sectors of the State. The broiler slaughter ranks as the eleventh sector with the greatest impact on the employment of Paraná State, as a result of its production increase. On the other hand, the employment multiplier of the broiler production sector is not significant in the State. These two sectors are not the largest generators of direct jobs in Paraná State, but both figure among the five sectors that generate the greatest number of indirect and induced jobs for each R$ 1 million increased in final demand. Thus, both sectors pose among the largest generators of total employment in the State. Considering that public financial resources are generally low, the government should preferentially invest in sectors with the most important linkage effects in the economy (key sectors), as an attempt to maximize economic and social benefits. Thus, the broiler production and slaughter sectors deserve economic incentives from governmental agencies due not only to they contribute to the directly generated production, income and employment, but also they pose as key sectors in the Paraná State.
