RESUMO

Chapter 1 presents a discussion of method, inspired on F.Pessoa s "Livro do Desassossego" (Book of Unrest), stressing the difficulties that clinicians find in trying to solve patients problems, whenever complaints or symptoms fail to fit into everyday medical terminology. Chapter 2 contains a series of texts that are hoped to contribute to a holistic view of medicine. Chapter 3 and 4 are dedicated respectively to an analysis of present day gastroenterological practice and the possible value of interview as therapeutic means.Following a suggestion by Rezende, this practice is described using the terminology of Lacan, Le, a) the body s real (including the actual symptoms and complaints); b) the imaginary (what the patient believes he has) c) and the symbolic (what the symptom means). The lacanian psychoanalytic line is however noi followed further. Chapter 5 describes and analyses 15 Ratients in whom subjective and psychic elements are well to the fore. Finally, the basic contributions that such perspcttive may offer to clinical medicine are stressed.
