RESUMO

This study analyzes two regions known as Faxinal de Taboãozinho and Faxinal da Barra Bonita, located in the municipal district of Prudentópolis, in the State of Paraná. It attempts to identify their main characteristics, and searches for alternatives for their maintenance and the development of Rural Tourism. The Faxinais region of Paraná is facing high levels of rural exodus, due to the lack of public policies. Seen as a traditional rural production system, the Faxinal system is highly characteristic of the central-southern region of Paraná, where common and private use of the land exist side by side, along with the integration of intensive livestock breeding in common areas. The region also has a multi-agricultural system of subsistence farming, with little sale of surpluses, as well as low impact logging. In 1997, the Paraná Government recognized the existence of the Faxinais, through Decree no. 3446-97. This led to a differentiated treatment, based on annual valuations which sought to further knowledge of the system and the transformations taking place, and to propose actions for improvement of the living conditions in the region. The tourism activity in this region is an alternative for promoting development in Faxinais de Taboãozinho and Barra Bonita, which are the objects of this study. The collection and analysis of empirical data about the Faxinal System enabled the characterization of this system and its way-of-life, raising elements about family agriculture, and the preservation of the regions natural and cultural heritage, indicating tourism as an alternative for the maintenance of this system
