RESUMO

Resorting to the theoretical instruments ar Cultural History, this thesis focuses on the practices and representations linked to the social phenomenon known as "confidence game" (or "stellionate", in judicial terms). The phenomenon is studied from two basic standpoints. The first is that the schemes and plots typical of the phenomenon search support on the mentalities of the society in which they are put into effect, reflecting, therefore, much of its cultural environment. The second is that the plans of deception are put into execution by means of genuine theatrical performances, in which the deceivers and even their victims play predetermined roles. These standpoints are illustrated and discussed by means of the presentation of several deceitful actions used in the City of São Paulo, in the period between 1930 and 1960 - in episodes that were identified above all by the consultation of lawsuits documents and of police news published in the newspapers of the period referred to.
