RESUMO

The tracing of the construction of black identity/consciousness by members of the lay brotherhood of "Our Lady of the Rosary", a black community founded 1711 in Sao Paulo, is the maio proposal ofthis work. The roles of this community, as well as all the others of the same designation and widespread in Brazil during the XVIII century, are based on the teachings ofthe old traditional catholic church, established with its lay, social and family oriented characterof the popular Catholicism in colonial Brazil. Analyzing specifically this lay brotherhood of Sao Paulo today, one observes a strong pluralism in the construction of identities due to varying and different "timelines" in the configurations of identities of the group with respect to being black and at the same time catholic. Two maio groupings can be found in this brotherhood which are tied up closely to two specific periods of the evolution of the catholic church. Therefore, two different ways of acting ofthe black member in the community could be observed. The first group still adheres to roles and manners of the so-called Romanization of the Catholic Church, which, during the second half of the 19th century, introduced tridentina thinking into the daily life of the church. This had strong influence on the members of the brotherhood. The second group, however, is in favor of the ideas of the II Council of the Vatican, which brought back the lay action into the church servires, introduced political action into the pastoral work and offered new visions about cultural aspects of specific groups of their members. That way, the role of women in the participation of administrative and political decisions has been redefined as well as the possibility of membership in groups of afro-brasilian creeds. In its contacts will the external world, however, the brotherhood acts as Doe, hiding, as much as possible, the existing differences. However, a closer look at the daily relations of the members at various occasions showed the diverging aspects of events in the evolution of the Catholic Church that hadtaken place long ago. this coexistence which promotes a "line crossing" of identities: homogeneous in contacts with the outside world but heterogeneous in relations in the group by itself. Between the "one only" and the "multiple one" aspects of identity of the community, there appear clearly the facts of the heterogeneous relations in the group by itself. This shows up clearly at the level of liturgy. The coexistence of the afro-brazilian as well as the traditional liturgy of the "Holy Mass" are, at the one hand, clear signs of the action of both groups but also evidence of the existing differences in the groups identity. Differences as a result of events in the evolution of the Catholic Church that had taken place long ago
